Ready, set, shoot! It's time for your child's big debut with school photos. Are you ready to send them off to have their year marked with an image?

Remember picture day? The bright lights, obscenely blue background paper and the weird arm rest . . . Times have changed but a lot of the school photo experience hasn't. Here's how to prepare your preschooler or School age child for the big day.

Great Tips for Picture Day

  • You're first thought might be to dress your child up in their fanciest clothes, comfort be damned. But that might not be the best decision if you want your child's photos to be their very best.

Now we all have that infamous picture with an outfit we thought was “Perfect” at the time and I am sure it may reflect the fashion sense of the season, but remember this is a picture that will last forever and be passed down from generation to generation. Choose the clothing that is a mixture of complimentary and something you child loves to wear.  Don’t make them wear something that is too hot or cold, uncomfortable or makes them miserable as it will only end up reflecting on their face and smile and may ruin the whole picture.

  • It's been ingrained that saying "cheese!" is the best way to have a camera ready smile at the drop of a dime. However, that advice is just old. Wannabe Studios would rather see a genuine smile or laugh.  "Please don't coach your child to a fake smile.

  • Plan your child’s haircut for about one week before Picture Day.

  • Choose a hairstyle similar to how your child is normally groomed

  • For older teens, send hair and makeup supplies with your child for quick touch-ups

  • Limit over-exposure to the sun for a few days before Picture Day

  • Choose solid colors or simple clothing patterns

  • Avoid shirts with slogans

  • Select small accessories that do not detract, such as simple earrings, pins and necklaces

  • Have your child get enough sleep on the night before Picture Day

  • Don’t discourage your child from taking a School Picture even if you are not planning to order photos. Your school uses these pictures for identification purposes.
